TRUST-AI improves trustworthiness of artificial intelligence

Standard Post with Image

We are honoured to announce that in the Framework of Horizon 2020, our TRUST AI Project: 952060, Call: H2020-EIC-FETPROACT-2019 has been started as of October 2020. The H2020-RIA (Research and Innovation Action) project will last for 48 months and has a €4M budget.

The participating partners are: Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC); Tartu Ulikool; Institut National De Recherche Eninformatique Et Automatique; Stichting Nederlandse Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Instituten; Applied Industrial Technologies (APINTECH); Ltplabs, Lda.; TAZI Bilisim Teknolojileri A.S. They will be working on three different use cases which will bring important benefits in cancer-treatment, last-mile delivery and energy consumption.

Aim of the project

The aim of this project is to explore and consolidate a new technological direction for making AI systems more understandable and put it on the map as a viable paradigm. The direction we propose here is ‘human-centric explainable AI’ (HCXAI), more specifically ‘human-guided symbolic learning’, which conducts ‘guided empiricism’ on comprehensible analytical expressions.

What will be developed?

The approach consists of involving human intelligence in the discovery process, resulting in AI and humans working together to find better solutions, i.e. models that are effective, comprehensive and generalizable. This is made possible by employing ‘explainable-by-design’ symbolic models and learning algorithms, and by adopting a human-centric, ‘guided empirical’ learning process that integrates cognition, machine learning and human-machine interaction, ultimately resulting in a Transparent, Reliable and Unbiased Smart Tool (TRUST).

How will this project be implemented?

TRUST will ensure its adequacy to tackle predictive and prescriptive problems, and create an innovation ecosystem around it, whereby academia and companies can further exploit it. Three use cases will be explored in this project in the field of Healthcare (for tumor treatment), Online Retail (for selecting delivery time slots) and Energy (for supporting demand forecasts at buildings and beyond). Beside that, TRUST will have an impact on society in general as well and find applications in a wide range of sectors, such as banking, insurance, manufacturing and public administration.
